I have had mixed feelings about birthdays for a long time, and while when I was “younger” I was happy when I got older, now I am not so happy each year that passes. This birthday was quite lovely, because I was able to get out of the City and into nature with Craig and my friend Danny – and it was just absolutely “necessary.”
On Friday I received some horrible news that broke my heart it two, and I don’t know how to correctly communicate it to my readers. This is appropriate because the news involves the closing of one of my favorite podcasts, but it also hits me personally because it has come to this because my friend has become to sick to continue doing the show. This is very hard for me to write about, and I don’t know the right words to use in order to communicate this – so I am going to do my best. My friends Frank & Laura from Spooktalkular, a unique and wonderful podcast about the paranormal, are conducting the finale to their show. My friend Frank was diagnosed with cancer in which they write on their website:
Sadly on February 28th of 2011, Frank was diagnosed with Stage III Esophageal Cancer. He spent the year battling the disease with chemotherapy and surgery but a year later, it was determined that his disease has progressed to Stage IVb which is considered terminal.
For those of you who have EVER followed me around, you will know that I have been on this show three times for various reasons, and that Frank, Laura, and a group of my friends made a really cool road trip to West Virginia in search of the “Mothman” – and to enjoy the “Mothman Festival,” which included memories I will never forget.
When I heard the news I was shopping at Kroger, and I broke down. I broke down on the phone talking to Laura, and then she put Frank on the phone, and I had to be strong… because Frank was strong. He talked to me on the phone about how he feels great, but that he tires easily and that he is looking forward to giving Spooktalkular a proper send off. It is my wish that people who read this will follow my blog updates, and TUNE IN TO THE FINAL SHOW so that you can help us say goodbye. This fucking pisses me off, because I don’t know how to react to this news. I sit here and think to myself that prayers are in order for my friend Frank, because he is a great person – and I am not going to let him give up. I am not ready to hear about finales, and FUCK CANCER.
As for my birthday, I had a great day with my Partner Craig, and my Brother Danny which spawned a ton of cool photographs. I am posting the slideshow below, and hopefully we will have more from our upcoming adventures. Today was a good day, but my heart is heavy – it’s mixed emotions – and what I can’t control I will be mad at……… and Frank, if you read this, I love you buddy. I’m here.
I have to thank Craig and Danny for making this an awesome weekend, because it truly was. I needed to get out so badly, and to get away – and you guys made it a blast. I am so lucky.
Peace To All,
Jake A. Wheat
…. Special thanks to my friend Kim for sharing this photo of Greg, Laura, and myself in Point Pleasant, WV. This photo made me laugh, because our expressions are so well – self explanatory. Indeed Greg looks as if he is about ready to bite my fingers off….. and Laura is just smiling away! LOL!
BTW – someone remind me to NOT wear that huge honking coffin ring with that bone bracelet again….. sheesh!
